Back on the Job Restore Your Battered Finances

Back on the Job Restore Your Battered FinancesBack on the Job? Restore Your Battered FinancesBack on the Job Restore Your Battered FinancesTodays guest post is written by Victoria, who offers insight and understanding from an experienced perspective on Ratelines.com. Since 2007, she has been producing online content for her clients and online audience, specializing in financial advice and ways to calculate interest rates.Poor economic conditions, including unemployment rates near 10%, have forced many people who wouldnt normally do so to liquidate their savings and rely on leistungspunkt cards to pay their bills. As the economy improves, and more people go back to work, rebuilding financial strength should be a top priority. If youre among those whove experienced a financial battering, and you recently started a new job, here are three steps you can take to rebuild your finances after your new income reaches a steady flow1.Refinance your mortgage.Mortgage rates are still low, but will likely increase over the next couple years. If youre getting back to work, you now have a reliable income stream and can take advantage of the low mortgage rates to reduce your monthly payment, possibly by hundreds of dollars.2.Rebuild your savings.Another important step is to rebuild an emergency fund that can pay several months worth of bills. Aim to add to that fund until it contains about nine months of living expenses. To rebuild your fund quickly, establish a detailed budget and do everything you can to stick to it. Cut back on unnecessary costs such as trips to Starbucks, eating out, movie rentals, even magazine subscriptions and things you dont use. It may be difficult at first, but if you stick to your budget for a solid year, youll look back and feel not only wealthier but also empowered because you will have tamed your spending. You may even reward yourself with a weekend trip to the beach.3.Pay down your debt.Next, target your credit card balances. Having a large amount of outstanding credit card debt can be financially devastating due to the fact that interest rates often exceed 20%. If this means cutting costs elsewhere for a little while, it will be worth it in the end. After you set up your emergency fund, pay down your outstanding credit card debt as quickly as possible to free up more income that you can either save or spend. While youre at it, shop around for cards with the lowest interest rates to cut your monthly interest expense. One last tip to re-building your savings Dont get discouraged about your current situation. Take control. Once you stop spending on things you dont need, youll start to binnensee not only an increase in your savings account, but also an increase of confidence, which can be more valuable than what you have in the bank.

Why It#8217;s Sometimes a Good Idea to Break Your Career Rules

Why It8217s Sometimes a Good Idea to Break Your Career Rules Why It8217s Sometimes a Good Idea to Break Your Career Rules Life lessons seem hard to grasp at first, but so obvious once you get them.I recently spoke with a former client who completely transformed his career. He went from working at a university in administration to working in corporate strategy at a Fortune 500 company. I asked him, Looking back, how have you changed the most in the last few years? He said something I wasnt expecting I learned not to pay so much attention to the rules. This philosophy has changed not only the way he looks at work, but also the way he makes choices in his personal life.In life, and in the job search, we often pay attention to the constraints put on us by others. These rules seem so clear and concrete when were obeying them. Theyre there to protect us and to guide us right? How many times have you skipped over a job posting because you didnt meet the minimum requirements? You could proba bly do the job, but applying would be a big waste of time. What would you think if you knew that many employers dont really care about minimum job requirements? Its true Ask a hiring manager what they would prefer an experienced employee with a bad attitude or an inexperienced employee whom they really like. Most of the time, theyll pick the inexperienced person. After all, most job functions are common sense and can be taught. What cant be taught is work ethic and a positive attitude.Have you ever thought of applying for graduate school, but you didnt because your test scores are too low or youve already missed the application deadline? What would you say if you knew that universities dont always hold to their application deadlines and test score recommendations? It depends on the school, of course. But if theres something special about your background and the university has an open spot or two in the incoming class, theres a good bet they will entertain your application especially if you call or make an in-person visit.Have you ever stayed at a job you hated because it seemed like the right thing to do?Were often taught that staying at one company for years is the only way to go. Its the responsible thing to do. But in todays workplace, a diverse work history is actually valued by many employers. Job hopping isnt the deal breaker it once was. When I reflecton breaking the rules, I see many examples of how I broke the rules in my own career. I moved across the country (twice) to study. I switched my career path three times. I have quit on more than one occasion with no new job lined up. Every time, I was told that I shouldnt or couldnt do it. But I did, and it worked out.In life, and in our careers, were often the biggest barriers to our own success. Once you decide that the rules dont matter so much, youll find that things become much, much easier.A version of this article originally appeared on The Memphis Daily News.Angela Copeland is a career coach and CEO at her firm,Copeland Coaching.

Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent geschftsleben strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which f ound that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial posit ions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and indu strial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

Top Skills and Certifications for the Knowledge Economy

Top Skills and Certifications for the Knowledge EconomyTop Skills and Certifications for the Knowledge EconomyDo you have the skills you need be a competitive candidate in todays knowledge economy? What can you do to ensure that you have the skills that employers look for when they are hiring and promoting employees? Sixty-three percent of workers learned new work-related skills (or upgraded their skills) in 2016, according to a Pew Research Center study. For some workers, this involved taking classes, earning a certificate, or even receiving a degree. For others, this involved attending conferences, attending a training session, or going to a seminar. The Knowledge Economy The knowledge economy relies primarily on the production, distribution, and use of information and ideas rather than physical or mechanical abilities. Many jobs across industries are part of the knowledge economy. These sortiment from academic researchers to programmers to software developers to health workers doing research and data analysis. All of these jobs require applying knowledge to serve other people in some way. In this economy, the knowledge of its workforce is the greatest value a company has. And with todays ever-changing technologies, employees need to constantly stay on top of the latest information and skills. To survive in the fast-paced knowledge economy, people are developing and upgrading their skill sets. By knowing what skills are fruchtwein crucial to the knowledge economy, and then acquiring those skills through certificate programs and other means, you can impress your employer or, if you are on the job market, impress any hiring manager. Developing New Skills and Why Many different kinds of workers and job seekers are engaging in professional learning to develop new skills, which is also known as upskilling. However, according to Pew Research Center, certain workers are more likely to continue learning than others. Many professional learners are college educ ated and are earning solid incomes. Many work in government, education, or non-profit organizations. These people often have the means to continue their education, and many of their jobs require continued professional development. However, people of all education levels and from all industries participate in upskilling, and they do it for many reasons. Some do it in hopes of preserving their jobs in the face of competition. Others do it to develop skills so that they dont lose their jobs to automation. Others do it to expand their business networks. Still, others do it because it is required for their job, for a promotion, or for a new job at a different company. The Top Skills for the Knowledge Economy The job-related skills that employers want in their employees vary by industry and by a specific job. However, there are certain skills that are considered extremely important in almost every job in the knowledge economy. Generally, the top skills are a mix of soft skills (skills that involve interacting with others) and IT skills. These skills can be combined into hybrid skills, which are a mix of hard and soft skills that can enhance a candidates competitiveness of a job. Communication Communication is a critical soft skill for almost everyone. Employees need to be able to speak clearly and politely to colleagues, clients, customers, and others. Through written and oral communication, workers must be able to convey their innovative ideas, decisions, questions, and more. Related skills Clarity, friendliness, interpersonal skills, oral communication, presentation, teamwork, written communication Flexibility The knowledge economy requires workers to be able to develop skills and become comfortable with new technologies on a regular basis. Therefore, employees need to be open to learning new things, and be flexible about taking on different tasks. Related skills Adaptability, multi-tasking, beingopen to feedback, open-mindedness Information Communi cation Technology (ICT) Information communication technology (ICT) refers to ones ability to use everyday technologies like computers, tablets, and mobile phones. It also relates to ones ability to perform certain tasks like sending emails and using basic computer software (including Microsoft Office). Other important ICT skills vary based on ones industry and specific job. For example, some jobs might involve other software programs or might require coding skills. People in the knowledge sector need to constantly develop skills in the technologies that are necessary for their jobs. Related skills Business intelligence (BI), coding, data analytics, information technology (IT), web design Lifelong Learning Because most employers encourage employees to continue learning, they want to hire people who are interested in continuing their education. Therefore, employees need to simply demonstrate a passion for lifelong learning in a variety of relevant subjects. Related skills Ambitio n, motivation, passion, self-directed learning Problem Solving Employees in the knowledge economy need to use their knowledge to solve real-world problems. They might use data to help doctors treat patients more efficiently, for example, or conduct historical research to teach students or the public about a significant moment in history. Whatever the job, employees need to be able to recognize problems and solve them using creativity and innovation. Related skills Analysis, creativity, critical thinking, decision making, innovation, originality Certificate Programs to Develop (or Upgrade) Your Skills Once you know what abilities you want to develop, consider the multiple ways you can learn and grow. For example, you can take courses online or at your local community college. Make sure the course is taught at an accredited institution and/or is well reviewed by people who have taken the course before. You might also ask your employer about in-staff training opportunities or a ttend conferences or conventions in your field. One of the best ways to develop skills is to participate in a certificate program. Certificate programs are short-term training programs that help you develop the skills necessary for a particular job. There are certificate programs in all industries, ranging from healthcare to business administration to the arts. These typically cost money, but they are less expensive than a degree program, and they often take less time. They usually sortiment from a couple of months to a year. Check out some popular online certificate programs, as well as certificate programs at your local community college. If you belong to a professional association, check to see if there are recommended certificate programs. These are just some of the options to consider Business Management Depending on the program, a certificate in business management can help you develop skills in leadership, ethics, finance, marketing, international business, and more. It is a good certificate for people interested in moving into leadership positions in business. Leadership and Management Certificate Acertificate in leadership and management can help executives or potential executives develop and improve their leadership skills. These skills can range from conflict resolution to effective communication to negotiation. Microsoft Certification Almost every job requires some knowledge of Microsoft programs. Project Management A certificate in project management is useful for anyone who leads a team or directs projects. The certificate can help you improve your leadership skills, your organization, and your ability to meet and exceed project goals. There are also free online courses y ou can take to upgrade your skills. Risk Management Risk management certificates have become increasingly popular among professionals. Making a Living as an Animal Writer

Making a Living as an Animal WriterMaking a Living as an Animal WriterContributing to pet publications can be a great way to combine a love of animals and a talent for writing. Duties The first thing a freelance writer must do is determine what topic they want to write about. Popular subjects for pet publications include veterinary or health issues, general care, breed profiles, exercise and activity ideas, behavior, training, nutrition, and traveling with pets. Pet writers must have strong research skills to ensure that the material provided to their readers is accurate and current. That information must be presented in a logical, clear, and concise manner. Pet writers must be able to work on a deadline. They must also have great attention to detail and strong proofreading skills to eliminate spelling and grammatical errors. Content and word count guidelines must be followed, and these vary from one publication to the next. Many publications do not accept unsolicited manuscripts . Generally, it is best to carefully review the writers guidelines on a publications website before submitting your work. Often you must first send a query or proposal, and then perhaps even a resume and writing samples from previously published work (often referred to in the industry as clips). Career Options Pet writers can work for a wide variety of print and online publications such as magazines, newspapers, newsletters, and professional journals. They also may work in marketing or advertising for companies in the pet product industry, usually writing ad copy or creating website content. Breed organizations, trade associations, zoos, aquariums, and other animal industry groups may employ writers in full or part time positions. Many pet writers work as freelancers, setting their hours and choosing their assignments. Established writers may be offered staff writing positions at publications, or they may go on to find work as editors and creative directors. Prominent pet public ations include Dog Fancy, Cat Fancy, Horse Illustrated, Bird Talk, Dog World, Horse Rider, AKC Family Dog, The Horse, breed association newsletters, and many more. Education and Training No formal training is required to be a pet writer, but many have in the industry have animal related degrees, writing or journalism degrees, or significant experience owning and working with animals. A solid grasp of spelling and grammar is essential. Writers should always take care only to submit their most carefully edited and polished work. Professional animal writing groups, such as the Dog Writers Association of America (DWAA) and the Cat Writers Association Inc (CWA), can provide valuable advice, workshops, and networking opportunities for members. Participation in relevant groups can enhance a writers resume, especially if the writer is new to the profession. Salary Compensation for a writer can vary based on length of the article, type of publication, and thenumber of articles publi shed by the writer each year. Pet writers working as freelancers are generally paid for each finished piece. The Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that salary for authors and writers varied from less than $28,610 (for the lowest 10 percent) to more than $109,440 (for the top ten percent) in May of 2010. The zentralwert was $55,420. The middle 50 percent earned between $38,150 and $75,060. While part-time writers might not produce the volume of work necessary to pull in the higher end salaries, many part-timers use writing as a supplementary source of income and hold another full-time position. Job Outlook With interest in pets steadily increasing, opportunities for pet writers should continue to grow as even more publications emerge to satisfy the demand. Opportunities with online publications should show significant growth. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, writers and authors held 40,980 jobs in 2010. Nearly 70 percent of those writers were classified as self-emp loyed. While the BLS expects employment for all writers to grow at an average rate (approximately 8 percent) from 2008 to 2018, the rate of growth may be significantly higher in this niche market.

Why it is actually good to believe that you are ordinary

Why it is actually good to believe that you are 'ordinary' Why it is actually good to believe that you are 'ordinary' “We like to think of our champions and idols as superheroes who were born different from us. We don’t like to think of them as relatively ordinary people who made themselves extraordinary.”  ? Carol Dweck,  Mindset: The New Psychology of SuccessDo you see yourself as “ordinary” or “special”?Likewise, do you see people who have achieved incredible things - people like Michael Jordan, Beethoven, and other seemingly godlike figures - as “ordinary” or “special”?Interestingly, if you see yourself and/or others as  Ã¢€œspecial,”  then you fall into what Dr. Carol Dweck calls a “fixed mindset.”Special implies some inherent trait that separates or draws a line between yourself and others. If you view people who have achieved brilliant things as “special” or “different” rather than “ordinary,” then there is no way you can become like them.If you view yourself as “special” and “different,” then that mindset will at some point paralyze you from be ing seen as anything otherwise. Your fear of not being viewed as special will stop you from trying bigger stuff that might fail. You’ll plateau very quick with this mindset. When you dig into the psychology of those who have achieved greatness, more often then not,  they view themselves as ordinary and trying to get better. They aren’t obsessed with their skills. Instead, they are focused on their goals and the efforts it takes to achieve them.  They aren’t thinking about the past, but the future. And their future is fundamentally bigger than their past. As a result, they are HUMBLE about where they are.The highest performers in the world, those who are amazing - AND CONTINUE GETTING BETTER - are those who don’t see themselves from a fixed perspective. In the words Condoleezza Rice, the American political scientist and 66th United States Secretary of State,  Ã¢€œI firmly believe you should never spend any time being the ‘former’ anything.”Success can actually lead to a f ixed-mindset because at some point or another you begin to believe your own press.  You begin to start believing you actually are different from other people, and that your success is the product of your difference, rather than your vision and action. This is actually very common -  more common than not. It’s very difficult for people to get to the top and STAY ON THE TOP. It’s hard for people who have been successful to successfully pivot to  something else after they’ve succeeded big in one area. Most people plateau at some point and stop striving for learning and further development, and instead, begin seeing themselves a certain way and over-attaching to a particular status they have.Ordinary = Transformable“What on earth would make someone a non-learner? Everyone is born with an intense drive to learn. Infants stretch their skills daily. Not just ordinary skills, but the most difficult tasks of a lifetime, like learning to walk and talk. They never decide it’s too hard or not worth the effort. Babies don’t worry about making mistakes or humiliating themselves. They walk, they fall, they get” ? Carol S. DweckIf you learned how to walk, then you are ordinary. If you are ordinary, then you can change and upgrade yourself. If you can walk and talk, then you’ve learned the hardest skills you’ll ever have to learn. Everything else is simply an appendage of these skills. The moment you begin to believe you’re special is the moment you’ve fallen into the fixed mindset. If you’re special, then there is something inherent in you that you were born with and can’t change.Being ordinary is far more fun.It takes off the useless pressure of “perfect.” As Dan Sullivan has said,  Ã¢€œ80% is getting results while 100% is still thinking about it.”It opens the door to learning and growth. It allows space to breathe, not have all the answers, make mistakes, and pivot.Be ordinary. But choose to create whatever life you want for yourself. You don’t hav e to have an ordinary life or lifestyle. You can make millions of dollars, influence millions of lives, and essentially, do whatever you want. But only if you’re ordinary and a learner.Ready to  upgrade?I’ve created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately. You follow this daily, your life will change very quickly.Get the cheat sheet here! This  article  first appeared on Medium.

Burnout from work is real, says the World Health Organization

Burnout from work is real, says the World Health Organization Burnout from work is real, says the World Health Organization Mad as hell and can’t take it anymore? Burnout can creep up on you. But the phenomenon hasn’t been officially recognized by any organization until this week, when the World Health Organization defined it as “syndrome… resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.”The organization stopped short of calling it a medical condition, but noted it had three “dimensions”: exhaustion, increased negativity towards one’s job reduced professional efficacy Burnout was strictly work-related, the WHO added“I think it’s really big news,” Beth Benatti Kennedy, a leadership and executive coach and resiliency-training expert. Kennedy has coached many clients through burnout, and up until now, she said, there was no classification for them when they needed to take a leave of absence.“The doctor has to say, ‘Put them in for depression,’ just so they can get a medical leave,” she said. While she thinks it will be tricky, the new classification “is going to make companies be proactive in preventing burnout,” she said. Kennedy cited the rigid working policies of many organizations that could lead to burnout: “We all know, there are companies that will be really against somebody working one day a week from home, or really against flex time â€" there’s still that going on in 2019.”Taking time off â€" or a one week vacation â€" to cure burnout is not enough, says Kennedy. Ample time off is needed, but think of it as structured rest. She encourages her clients to take care of their health, meditate, learn what their stress triggers are, as well as get coaching and therapy. The positive side of burnout is, if managed properly, it doesn’t last. “It’s not negative forever. You just have to get recharged.”The WHO also recognized video game addiction as a mental health disorder this week. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Article 80 of the Uniformed Military Code of Justice

Article 80 of the Uniformed Military Code of Justice Article 80 of the Uniformed Military Code of Justice Text “(a) An act, done with specific intent to commit an offense under this chapter, amounting to more than mere preparation and tending, even though failing, to effect its commission, is an attempt to commit that offense. (b) Any person subject to this chapter who attempts to commit any offense punishable by this chapter shall be punished as a court-martial may direct, unless otherwise specifically prescribed. (c) Any person subject to this chapter may be convicted of an attempt to commit an offense although it appears on the trial that the offense was consummated.” Elements (1) That the accused did a certain overt act; (2) That the act was done with the specific intent to commit a certain offense under the code; (3) That the act amounted to more than mere preparation; and (4) That the act apparently tended to effect the commission of the intended offense. Explanation (1) In general. To constitute an attempt there must be a specific intent to commit the offense accompanied by an overt act which directly tends to accomplish the unlawful purpose. (2) More than preparation. Preparation consists of devising or arranging the means or measures necessary for the commission of the offense. The overt act required goes beyond preparatory steps and is a direct movement toward the commission of the offense. For example, a purchase of matches with the intent to burn a haystack is not an attempt to commit arson, but it is an attempt to commit arson to applying a burning match to a haystack, even if no fire results. The overt act need not be the last act essential to the consummation of the offense. For example, an accused could commit an overt act, and then voluntarily decide not to go through with the in-tended offense. An attempt would nevertheless have been committed, for the combination of a specific intent to commit an offense, plus the commission of an overt act directly tending to accomplish it, constitutes the offense of attempt. Failure to complete the offense, whatever the cause, is not a defense. (3) Factual impossibility. A person who purposely engages in conduct which would constitute the offense if the attendant circumstances were as that person believed them to be is guilty of an at-tempt. For example, if A, without justification or excuse and with intent to kill B, points a gun at B and pulls the trigger, A is guilty of attempt to murder, even though, unknown to A, the gun is defective and will not fire. Similarly, a person who reaches into the pocket of another with the intent to steal that person’s billfold is guilty of an attempt to commit larceny, even though the pocket is empty. (4) Voluntary abandonment. It is a defense to an attempt offense that the person voluntarily and completely abandoned the intended crime, solely  because of the person’s own sense that it was wrong, prior to the completion of the crime. The voluntary abandonment defense is not allowed if the abandonment results, in whole or in part, from other reasons, for example, the person feared detection or apprehension, decided to await a better opportunity for success, was unable to complete the crime, or encountered unanticipated difficulties or unexpected resistance. A person who is entitled to the defense of voluntary abandonment may nonetheless be guilty of a lesser included, completed offense. For example, a person who voluntarily abandoned an attempted armed robbery may nonetheless be guilty of assault with a dangerous weapon. (5)  Solicitation. Soliciting another to commit an offense does not constitute an attempt.  See  paragraph 6 for a discussion of article 82, solicitation. (6)  Attempts not under Article 80. While most attempts should be charged under Article 80, the following attempts are specifically addressed by some other article, and should be charged accordingly: (a)  Article 85- desertion(b)  Article 94- mutiny or sedition.(c)  Article 100- subordinate compelling(d)  Article 104- aiding the enemy(e)  Article 106a- espionage(f)  Article 128- assault (7)  Regulations. An attempt to commit conduct which would violate a lawful general order or regulation under  Article 92  (see  paragraph 16) should be charged under Article 80. It is not necessary in such cases to prove that the accused intended to violate the order or regulation, but it must be proved that the accused intended to commit the prohibited conduct. d .  Lesser included offenses. If the accused is charged with an attempt under Article 80, and the offense attempted has a lesser included offense, then the offense of attempting to commit the lesser included offense would ordinarily be a lesser included offense to the charge of attempt. For example, if an accused was charged with attempted larceny, the offense of attempted  wrongful appropriation  would be a lesser included offense, although it, like the attempted larceny, would be a violation of Article 80. e.  Maximum punishment. Any person subject to the code who is found guilty of an attempt under  Article 80  to commit any offense punishable by the code shall be subject to the same maximum punishment authorized for the commission of the offense attempted, except that in no case shall the  death penalty  be adjudged, nor shall any mandatory minimum punishment provisions apply; and in no case, other than attempted murder, shall confinement exceeding 20 years be adjudged. This study proves why you really need a work wife

This study proves why you really need a work wife This study proves why you really need a work wife Having a work spouse can be greatly beneficial to your career and overall happiness at work, according to research.  About 70% of business professionals said they currently have a work spouse now or have had one in the past, according to a recent  Office Pulse survey  by digital media company Captivate. This is up significantly from 65% in 2010 and  32% in 2006.And now a new study on West Point cadets  published in the  Journal of the American Economic Association finds  that if you are a woman, having a work wife will help you succeed at work. Looking at data from 1976 to 1984 researchers  Nick Huntington-Klein and Elaina Rose found that female cadets were more likely to thrive if they were in groups with other female cadets. The researchers wrote in The Harvard Business Review, “We found that, when another woman was added to a company, it increased the likelihood a woman would progress from year to year by 2.5%. This means that, on average, an extra two women in a company on top o f what it already had would completely erase the five percentage point female/male progression gap. Another way to think about the size of the effect is to consider only first-year cadets, who have the worst attrition rates.Women in first-year groups with only one other woman only had a 55% chance of sticking around for the next year. But women in the most woman-heavy groups, with 6 to 9 other women, had an 83% chance of continuing to the next year.”Of course, these findings don’t directly correlate to women working together in the workplace, but the numbers are rather promising.

Essential Sales Skills for Professionals

Essential Sales Skills for Professionals Essential Sales Skills for Professionals There are a lot of different ways to approach sales, but they all tend to rely on the same sets of skills. Note that these are skills, not talents: talents are inborn, but skills are learned and practiced. Anyone can learn to be an effective salesperson, and good salespeople can become great ones by honing the following sales skills. Maintaining Self-Confidence This is the most important skill a salesperson can cultivate. Why? Because all the other skills are based on persistence. If you have every other sales skill listed below, but you give up at the first hint of a “no,” then youll never have a chance to use those skills. The first time you speak to a prospect, they might not want to talk to you because theyre having a bad day... but if you call back a week later, theyll be eager to buy. Self-confidence doesnt end with persistence; if you believe in yourself and your product, your prospects will be inclined to believe as well. Self-confidence will also incline you towards a more assertive closing approach, which is vital to your selling success. Good Listening Most salespeople are natural talkers. Unfortunately, even a great speaker will only get so far without a little listening. Taking the time to ask your prospect questions and listen to the answers shows respect for them, and gives you a clearer idea of what they want. So how can you tell if youre doing enough listening? The next time you cold call a prospect, ask an open-ended question and then hit the mute button and leave yourself muted for at least a minute (or until you are sure the prospect is finished). By forcing yourself to be quiet, you will notice right away how strong your urge is to jump in and say something before the prospect has stopped talking. Persuasiveness Emotion plays a major role in sales. Theres an old saying that “features tell, benefits sell.” Features are the facts about your product or service; benefits are their emotional connotations. For example, a 0% interest rate on a credit card is a feature... being able to save money while buying the things you need is a benefit! Persuasiveness is the skill that allows you to convey these emotions to the customer. If you can make your prospect feel how great it will be to own your product and how much their life will be improved when they have it, you can sell it to them. Building Strong Relationships This sales skill is just as important to a salespersons business life as it is to their personal life. Building and maintaining healthy relationships is the key to developing a strong network. And networking will allow you to reach far, far more prospects than you could manage on your own. Remember the theory of “Six Degrees of Separation?” It implies that were all connected to each other somehow, through our social networks and indirect linkages between friends, colleagues, and acquaintances. Lets say youre trying to reach the decision maker at a major company, but you dont know anyone who works there. A call or two to your network contacts yields someone who knows someone who works for your target; armed with that persons name and direct phone number, you now have access to the prospect. Self-Motivating Even the best salesperson is always undergoing a work in progress to improve and get better. You can always find a way to develop your skills, work on your pitch, and learn more about the products and services you sell. But the drive to constantly improve yourself has to come from within. Your manager might direct you to make some changes if your sales start to plummet, but if you are constantly working to become a better salesperson, you can start working on the issue before it affects your numbers.

7 Things You Appreciate After a Horrible Boss The Muse

7 Things You Appreciate After a Horrible Boss â€" The Muse 7 Things You Appreciate After a Horrible Boss - The Muse I can easily remember my most horrible boss, and how much he negatively impacted my life. As I’m sure you can imagine, even if you don’t have first-hand experience, it’s extremely hard to work for someone you hate, even if you love what you’re doing. Well, I survived, and I’m happy to report that I learned some valuable lessons from the experience. Not only did I learn not to take things personally, that it’s OK to question authority, and that asking for what I want is worth a shot, I also learned to appreciate plenty of other things you might be tempted to take for granted. 1. Real Lunch Breaks In my old job, the culture dictated that you ate at your desk (just like the boss!), and if I forgot my lunch, well, that’s when I survived on a sleeve of crackers sitting in my drawer. I couldn’t risk leaving to grab food, for fear of returning to an overflowing inbox, and possibly a few missed calls (not to mention my supervisor’s glares). But that was then. Now, I have every reason to be grateful for many regular lunch breaks, taken away from my desk. Instead of griping about a last-minute meeting with someone during the time I typically eat, I remember the days when I was afraid to duck out for even a 15-minute break and remind myself to appreciate the time I usually have. 2. Permission to Make Appointments During the Day Scheduling a doctor appointment mid-morning and being absent from work for an hour or more is not something I’d have considered attempting with my old clock-watching boss. Even some decent managers make it hard for people to take care of personal matters during stated business hours. My current organization, however, understands that sometimes you’ll have to deal with these things during the week when you’re otherwise expected to be in the office. The fact that I’ve got the supervisor’s green light to attend these appointments without being forced to use a vacation day is cause for applause. 3. Happy Co-workers Obvious but true: A bad boss affects the whole team. When I work for a good leader, I'm surrounded by productive, content co-workers, and I can focus on the job in front of me rather than waste time commiserating about how much I hate my boss. Venting can be cathartic, but if it’s all I ever do, it can take a toll. Even neutral colleagues make a better work environment than ones who just complain- so while I may not be BFFs with my whole team, I’ve got to admit it’s nice being surrounded by people who aren’t living in fear of upper management. 4. Appreciation The first week after starting a new job, my boss thanked me for my work at the end of the day. I laughed in spite of myself. I thought he was kidding- all I’d accomplished was routine report writing and manning the phone. I was more used to criticism than praise in my old position. My new manager believed in expressing gratitude for his employees’ hard work, and I quickly learned to be grateful for it. I may not be thanked each and every time that I check an item off my to-do list, but I don’t forget to embrace it when it happens. It keeps me motivated. 5. Work-Life Balance Back when I worked for that horrible boss, I found myself constantly checking for missed calls or emails hours after I'd left the office. My situation was so bad that I had dreams where I woke up groping for my phone, convinced that I’d forgotten to answer an important email that would give my boss reason to chew me out- again. My current job- dream gig or not- affords me the luxury of not being attached to my inbox and voicemail at all hours of the day, and that’s a valuable perk. My out-of-office time is respected- it's wonderful. 6. Room to Be Wrong Working in a healthy environment means room to grow- by experimenting and making mistakes. When I was walking on a tightrope over the fire of my boss’ wrath, I was afraid to take chances, which rules out exercising my creative side more often than not. How can I possibly think outside the box when my supervisor’s breathing down my neck on rewriting the report so that it follows the exact template he laid out for me. Talk about stunted growth. Now that I'm at ease tossing around ideas and trying different methods of executing old processes, it's great! I'm empowered by my boss to brainstorm new ideas, and I’ve got some autonomy- something definitely worth celebrating. 7. Trust Driving to work one morning (early, might I add), I hit a bad patch of traffic due to an accident in front of me. I was so terrified that my boss would think I was lying about my (impending) tardiness that I whipped out my phone to take a picture so that he would know I was telling the truth. After working in an environment where all my decisions were questioned, and maybe even my integrity itself, reporting to someone who trusts me is nothing to sneeze at. So, while my manager may not trust me with his most senior account just yet, at least now I can send an email without looking over my shoulder to see if he’s watching me type it. Memories do fade over time, even ones that involve horrible bosses. So, if I find myself annoyed because of an assignment that doesn’t thrill me, a co-worker who slacks off, or a CEO who’s never around, I take a second to remind myself of the many things I have to be grateful for. Silly as it may sound, I for one, don’t take lunch for granted. Photo of man at desk courtesy of Michael H/Getty Images

Biobots to the Rescue

Biobots to the Rescue Biobots to the Rescue Biobots to the Rescue It is a serious approach to defining and even identifying the parameters of immediate disaster response although the plan has the makings of a Grade B horror movie. North Carolina State University researchers are moving to the next level in using cockroaches to penetrate collapsed structures or dangerous areas, pairing them with new software, hardware and aerial drones to gather digital information they believe will produce maps of compromised areas and possibly save lives. The roachesMadagascar Hissing Cockroaches that can reach three inches in size at maturitywould be fitted with small platforms of sensors and released into an area. Researchers already have demonstrated with some success the roaches, or biobots now that they are fitted with the electronic backpacks, can be remotely controlled. Now, they believe they have the software and hardware to allow the roaches to relay data to a hovering drone that can send the data to a central control. As the biobots roam through the area, their movements would be confined within by an electronic beacon emitted by the drone. Data is collected by each insect, and is shared or can be accessed by one of the group. Just one member of the swarm can transmit all of the collected data to the drone. Using newly developed software, operators can then stitch together the data to form an image of the space within which the biobots are working. The new technology allows cyborg cockroaches to pick up sounds with small microphones and seek out the source of the sound. Image: Eric Whitmire / NC State University Edgar Lobaton, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, is part of the NC State team, who has co-authored two papers describing the work. We dont want to control each individuals behavior independently, he says. The idea is to exploit their natural behavior. The idea is to release a swarm of sensor-equipped biobots, such as the remotely controlled cockroaches, into a collapsed building or dangerous unmapped area. The key is development of the electronic beacon to control the swarm. Theres no way really to naturally contain them in a specific area, notes Lobaton. So now we propose to use a leader to contain them: a drone to guide or herd the swarm. What the swarm will be carrying are tiny backpacks fitted with small microphones as well, to pick up sounds that could help emergency responders locate and rescue survivors. Led by Dr. Alper Bozkurt, also an NC State assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, a team has developed two types of customized backpacks fitted with microphones. One type has a single microphone to capture relatively high-resolution sound from any direction. The second type is fitted with an array of three-directional microphones to determine the direction of the sound. Researchers have developed algorthims to analyze the sound from the array and localize the source. Then, they can steer the biobots in the proper direction using the beacon as a sort of mobile corral in which they are contained. As the corral moves in one direction, the biobots move in various directions within until they reach the electronic boundry. This is significant in a few ways, says Lobaton. It ensures the biobots will remain at the site and within range of each other to form a wireless network. It can also steer the swarm to light, where the tiny solar panels on the backpacks can recharge. Lobaton says a strong radio beacon is enough to penetrate into portions of a collapsed structure and contain and direct the swarm. He says their research shows they will lose contact with a number of individuals but that should not interfere with the task of mapping an area. As long as we can get a signal from any part of the swarm, we will be able to retrieve data on what the rest of the swarm is doing, he says. Bozkurt already has successfully demonstrated cockroaches using the backpack technology, but Lobatons latest experiment used small 1.5-inch robots that simulated cockroach behavior after being released into a maze-like space. Insects have both drawbacks and advantages compared to robots, and other scientists are opting to use the real live creature. Scientists at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore are using large beetles, implanting electrodes into their muscles to control how they walk. Others at Cornell University have successfully controlled the flight of moths with implanted devices. In the case of the North Carolina State research, that may not be practical because they are using numbers of insects. They are also a cheap, ready-made platform, compared to a robot that has to be designed and manufactured from numerous small parts. An insect robot also needs complicated code written to allow them to overcome obstacles. While the backpacks are tiny, Lobaton says they are fitted with inexpensive off-the-shelf technology. The roaches are put into a refrigerator where the cold temperature stuns them and reduces their metabolism, making it easier to fit them with the backpacks. One prototype cost only about $100, he says. A lot of this technology is virtually off the shelf. Lobatons next step is replacing the robots with the backpack-fitted roach cyborgs to duplicate their test results. We need to integrate more information, he says, pointing to the exchange of information such as sound from microphones and data for mapping between two or more biobots. For Further Discussion We dont want to control each individuals behavior independently. The idea is to exploit their natural behavior. Prof. Edgar Lobaton, North Carolina State University

3 Questions to Guide You Toward a Good Internship

3 Questions to Guide You Toward a Good Internship Questions to Guide You Toward a Good Internship 3 Questions to Guide You Toward a Good Internship For many recent college graduates, post-campus life has turned out to be no fun. They may have thought there would be little problem getting jobs in their chosen careers after they earned their degrees. But, in the middle of a spirit-crushing recession, their psyches have been served a dollop of disillusionment. Colleges are facing heavy pressure today to better prepare their students to transition to the workforce. That pressure is justified given the cost of a college education today. (As the parent of a college student, I know this all too well.) And that's why many schools and students see the potential value internships can have in giving students an edge after graduation. Businesses apparently recognize that too. More than three-quarters of employers that responded to a survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) said they prefer to hire people who have relevant work experience from internships. The key phrase here is relevant work experience, which means your internship needs to be more than just making copies and coffee, and fetching lunch for other workers. If you're in college, recently graduated, or looking to do an internship as part of a midlife career change, here are three things you need to ask yourself about an internship opportunity: Will the internship give me experience similar to what I want to be doing in my first (or next) job? Will it give me valuable skills I can use in any job? For example: Proficiency in new software, navigating office politics, learning to work on a team-based project, organizing my workload, etc. Will I be working with seasoned professionals who can mentor me, perhaps teach me something about working in the business that I didnt learn in school? Be prepared to find out the answers duringif not beforeyour interview. Then, after you complete the internship, take stock of what you learned and document your newfound experience, skills, and accomplishments on your resume. It doesnt matter that you were paid peanuts (or nothing at all) as long as you gained the relevant work experience employers want to see.
